Today, President Trump suggested that he would consider cutting spending to the World Health Organization, or WHO, due to their handling of COVID-19 and helping China downplay the severity of the outbreak.
He tweeted, “The W.H.O. really blew it. For some reason, funded largely by the United States, yet very China centric. We will be giving that a good look. Fortunately I rejected their advice on keeping our borders open to China early on. Why did they give us such a faulty recommendation?”
The WHO has long been a respected medical agency of the UN and is responsible for handling international response to public health matters. The WHO’s handling of the novel coronavirus lead to delayed response around the world. They are partially responsible for this pandemic.
On January 14th the WHO seemed to be parroting the Chinese propaganda with this tweet.
The day before this tweet, the first COVID-19 case outside of China was reported in Thailand.
The United Nations, the intergovernmental organization in charge of the WHO, has been under scrutiny for bowing to China. Last Wednesday the UN put China on the Human Rights Council (see my previous article “China Named to UN Human Rights Council“) despite China putting over 1 million Muslims into concentration camps and countless other human rights violations.
Tedros Ghebreyesus, the head of the WHO, tweeted “For the first time, #China has reported no domestic #COVID19 cases yesterday. This is an amazing achievement, which gives us all reassurance that the #coronavirus can be beaten.” on March 20th.
Just 11 days later, US Intel reported that China was significantly downplaying their data in regards to COVID-19 (again see “China Named to UN Human Rights Council“)
Another example of WHO bowing to china is an interview of the WHO Director General, Bruce Aylward, pretending not to hear a question about reconsidering Taiwan’s membership into the WHO. The WHO rejected Taiwan as an observer in 1997. The interviewer then goes to ask the question again when Aylward told her to move on to the next question and then proceeded to hang up when she continued on with her question. (See clip here.)
The Chinese-Taiwanese relation has been tense historically and had gotten even tenser when Taiwan split from China in 1949 to become its own self-governing entity. The Chinese government has been nothing but obstructive to Taiwan and refuses to admit its existence as it’s own entity.
In regards to the UN and the WHO, as a Libertarian I am morally opposed to large, bloated international governmental bodies that take money from the US Tax payer especially when they don’t put American interests first. The US contributes roughly $600 Million annually to the UN, while the UN is acting as a propaganda wing of the Chinese Communist Party.
Nikki Haley, former US Ambassador to the UN, said it best when she said “For too long, [the UN] has been a protector of human rights abusers and a cesspool of political bias.” It is time for the US to withdraw itself, and its capital, from the UN and its little sister the WHO.
